| Step 1 - Drill a hole |   Step 2 - CA the tube in place
| Step 3 - Drive in a screw to form the thread
| | ||
Three simple steps and you get all sorts of advantages:
- No more worries about stripped threads - If a threaded hole into plain wood strips there are no very good ways to fix it, but if a plastic insert that strips is not only more resistant to stripping than wood is, but also, if it should somehow manage to strip them anyway, all you have to do is to drill the plastic out and replace it with a new insert.
- No worries about splitting wood - Screws can wobble around a bit and do all sorts of other things that can split wood which makes the threaded hole larger, so the screw wobbles more, which makes things even worse, etc, etc. With the threaded inserts any sideways loads from the screw are spread over a much wider area and this practically eliminates the wood's tendency to split.
- Works great with machine thread as well as sheet metal thread - The sleeves fit both types equally well.
- The fit can be easily ajusted. To make the fit tighter add a tiny drop of CA inside the tube. To make the fit looser simply run a tap into the tube so the threads are cut instead of merely pressed. This is also useful if you want to have a screw that can removed / installed by hand.

Orange (#6 size) used to glue an insert to the side of a hardwood fuselage. Use medium CA, use enough of it to form a fillet, and do NOT use any kicker.   Blue (1/4" size) ![]()

The orange (#6 size) also makes an ideal keeper for GWS axles as shown here and HERE. The tube is narrow enough that it only presses against the inner race of the shaft bearing, it's a perfect diameter to easily press onto the shaft by hand and is is still tight enough to stay on very firmly all by itself.   Other "Totally Tubular" uses include hatches, wings, cowls, canopies, motor mounts, servos, landing gears and pretty much anything you can think of. The inserts are available in the following colors and sizes:
  #2 Black TT Inserts - $2 / 8-pack requires 1/8" hole       fits 2-56 and #2 sheet metal thread screws   #4 Red TT Inserts - $2 / 8-pack requires 5/32" hole       fits 4-40 and #4 sheet metal thread screws   #6 Orange TT Inserts - $2 / 8-pack requires 11/64" hole       fits 6-32 and #6 sheet metal thread screws   #8 Yellow TT Inserts - $2 / pack requires 13/64" hole       fits 8-32 and #8 sheet metal thread screws   #1/4" Blue TT Inserts - $2 / pack requires 9/32" hole       fits 1/4-20 and 1/4" sheet metal thread screws
